July 8, Day 75 Chillagoe

Operation Tourist continues. Today we went to Chillagoe, picked up the mud-map from the Hub information centre, visited the caves, picnicked and swam at the Weir, walked around the smelter and enjoyed a bit of 4wding.

We visited Chillagoe last year and did the Trezkinn Cave tour but missed the "self-guided tour" caves so this year we skipped the tour guides and went exploring.   The first cave we went to was called Bauhinia and looked like a narrow hole going straight down, torches in hand, we went in, and down into the absolute blackness. Carolyn and the girls stayed at the entrance as it was a little steep to begin with but I wasn't going to let it beat me. Nothing seems to hold Terry back from exploring something and he checked out every nook and cranny to see where tunnels led to and how far we could go in. Geoff got lots of photos on his new toy. The second cave was much more open and we were all able to go in and explore without the need for light. Feeling the aches in the thighs now though.

The weir (next to the pump house at the end of the road) is a great place to recover from the rigors of exploring as it is a lovely place to sit, swim and picnic. Thoroughly recommend this spot as the water is clear, flowing and always full.
